the end of gender? what?

a friend of mine posted this article on facebook- and I wanted to share it with you all.  It has some interesting concepts on parenting (and culture in general).

to get you more excited to click the link let me share a little with you.

  • Kathy Witterick and her husband, David Stocker, are raising their 4-month-old child, Storm, without revealing the child's gender. According to the birth announcement from the Toronto couple: "We've decided not to share Storm's sex for now — a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storm's lifetime (a more progressive place?)"
  •  Andrej Pejic, an androgynous Australian model, worked both the male and female runways at the Paris fashion shows earlier this year.
  • boychicks- an interesting concept (not transgender)
  • the opposite view is also shared by Leonard Sax, a family physician, psychologist and founder and executive director of the National Association for Single Sex Public Education.
What do you think?  How important is gender?  Are we harming our children through gender stereotypes?  Could this end the stereotypes?  Where do we draw the line with being PC and gender neutral?

(my opinions)
Although kids should be free to choose what they are interested in without pressures form parents or society- this is too far.  God gives us many choices in life, but on the issue of gender he made it pretty clear.  Not a huge debate on that one- just look down.  I understand the issue of fetal misdevelopement which leads to transgender- but this is about something much more.  Gender plays an important part of our identity.  I agree with Sax on the importance of gender in school- there is a lot that plays into learning styles, development, and social growth that is all focused on gender.  I taught in a class of 50 and there were no cliques- but the boys grouped with boys and the girls grouped with girls.  It's a pretty common, and normal thing.  And gender neutral dorms- no.  Boys and Girls should not be cohabiting at the age of 18 in a college environment.  Way too many pressures, temptations, and confusions there.  but hey these are my opinions- what are yours?

  1. I read that article when it was posted on Yahoo and thought "how stupid". I also saw something on the news about a school that doesn't allow children to say "him, his, he" or "her, hers, she" when refering to another child/person. I won't ever understand this and I personally think it's just poor education. Boys are boys and girls are girls. That's how it is and while I understand not conforming to how society veiws traditional male/female roles, it is stripping them of a very important part of their identity.

  2. Nowadays people do and say things just to get into the media! Gender is gender and there is no way to raise without gender! Children know which sex They posses before they are 1! Dumbest article I have ever read!
